2. Cording:

Finishing the inside of your jewel box with cording, made of the same fabric as the lining, will give it the perfect touch. (Braids may be used instead, but they don’t have the same elegance.)

To make the cording, cut two bias strips, each 5/8” wide, from the center of the velvet (cut corner to corner) (Fig. 11). Spread glue over the entire back of each strip, being sure it is well covered, especially along the center. (If it isn’t, the cording will come apart later when trimmed.) Gently fold each in half lengthwise, making two long, narrow strips (Fig. 12).

(NOTE: Be sure to use enough glue to make good contact, but not so much that it will soak through the fabric. Be neat! Don’t get glue on the nap of the velvet, and don’t mash the nap. It is important to have a very light touch when working with fabric and glue!) When the strips have dried, trim them close to the folded edge, making two long, thin lengths of cording (Fig. 12). (If you are using a thinner material, try putting string in the center of the cording to give it body.)
